How-To Guides from Gadget Hacks

An alert claiming your Apple Account email changed unexpectedly could be a scam built to panic you into clicking, or it could mean someone actually got into your account. Those two situations call for completely different first moves, and guessing wrong wastes time you don't have if the second one is true.

Apple says the HomePod mini 2 can work as a Mac's default system speaker on compatible hardware, automatically routing audio that plays through macOS instead of requiring a manual AirPlay selection every time. That's according to MacRumors, citing Apple's own compatibility documentation, two days ago. If you're trying to use HomePod for Mac system audio today, that default-output option hasn't been independently verified as live in macOS yet, so the dependable path right now is still standard...

If "Switch to Google Assistant" has vanished from the Gemini app's account menu, you may have been moved to Gemini as part of Google's mobile migration. Google still publishes switch-back instructions, but 9to5Google found that the option had disappeared on devices it tested in September.

GPTK 4 and CrossOver are making some modern Windows titles genuinely playable on Apple Silicon, which sounds like great news if you're trying to play Windows games on an M5 Max Mac Studio you already own, or one you're thinking about buying. Before installing anything, know this: the most detailed benchmark report behind this guide tested a 40-core GPU, 48GB M5 Max MacBook Pro, not the base M5 Max Mac Studio, which has an 18-core CPU, a 32-core GPU, and 36GB of unified memory. Apple also offers...

Learning how to use AI Network Guard on Samsung One UI 9 won't turn your phone into a systemwide ad blocker, but it can quiet ad requests inside certain offline-capable apps. The feature works by cutting an app's internet connection completely, and it lives inside a hidden Wi-Fi menu called Connectivity Labs. Ads vanish only because the app can no longer reach a server to fetch them in the first place (Android Authority, yesterday; Techritual, today).

A Plex stream that stutters doesn't always mean the server needs more muscle. These Plex tips and tricks are built around one diagnostic habit: checking whether buffering comes from your network, a forced transcode, or an undersized server before you spend a dollar fixing a problem that isn't there. Someone who adds RAM or jumps to 2.5-gigabit Ethernet the moment buffering starts may be solving the wrong problem entirely, because the right fix depends on whether the bottleneck is CPU-bound...

If you're still emailing yourself a screenshot or dragging a photo into Drive just to get it onto a laptop, you're doing more work than the phone requires. This guide covers how to use Quick Share to transfer files on Android, whether the destination is your own Chromebook, a Windows PC, or someone else's phone standing next to you. Quick Share comes built into Android and ChromeOS already. Windows needs a separate app installed before it can take part in a transfer.

Developer Sam Henri Gold says he built Light Touch, calling it a "full-featured iPod touch 2G emulator for Mac" that sends graphics calls out of the emulator to the Mac's own OpenGL implementation instead of rendering them internally (Sam Henri Gold, Hachyderm, 3 days ago). That's the claim, posted three days ago, with no download link, project page, or install instructions attached to the post itself.

Changing the refresh rate in Windows 11 usually takes one trip through Settings. If you're here, though, you're probably dealing with one of two more annoying problems: a 144Hz option that keeps sliding back to 60Hz on its own, or one that never shows up in the dropdown at all. This guide covers the quick fix first, then a compatibility check that tells you which problem you actually have, followed by separate repair paths for each.

Anyone who shares a Spotify account with a child knows the drill: play nursery rhymes or an animated-movie soundtrack often enough, and suddenly those songs start influencing recommendations.

If Smart App Control just blocked an install and you're wondering whether you have to disable it to get past the warning, the short answer is: probably not.

For years, every iMessage conversation looked the same: the standard plain Messages backdrop, no matter who you were talking to. That changed when Apple shipped iOS 26, which lets you swap that plain canvas for a photo, a solid color, an animated preset, or an AI-generated image. Learning how to change the background on iPhone Messages takes about thirty seconds once you know where to look, but the feature works differently than most people expect. It isn't a personal theme sitting quietly on...

On one Android phone, apps, texts, call history, and settings combined added up to less than 132MB, while photos and videos on the same device totaled 76GB (Android Police, 15 months ago). That's a striking example, not a universal rule, but it points toward the real question behind how to reduce Android backup storage in Google Drive: check what's actually filling the account before touching a single setting.

This guide walks through how to import passwords into Apple Passwords, built around the Mac-based CSV import that third-party guides have documented in detail, plus a separate iPhone-only method that hasn't been shown to produce the same result. If switching password managers has been sitting on the to-do list, this covers what to check before starting, how the transfer actually works, and why it's worth verifying everything before deleting the old vault.

Apple Intelligence turns itself on the moment an eligible device updates to version 27.0 across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS, provided the language and region are supported (Apple Support, three weeks ago). Nobody flips a switch for it. That automatic rollout is exactly why a growing number of Mac owners are now searching for ways to disable Apple Intelligence on Mac and claw back the storage it quietly claimed.

Getting locked out of Windows 11 because a PIN won't work is a different problem than losing an account password, and it calls for a different fix. This guide walks through how to reset a forgotten Windows 11 PIN, starting with the safest built-in option and working toward backup routes for when the standard reset screen won't cooperate. Which method applies depends on one thing first: whether the device signs in with a Microsoft account or a local account, since the two paths split almost...

For apps that show an active Uninstall command, Settings is the supported path to remove them in Windows 11: open the three-dot menu, click Uninstall, done. Try that on certain preinstalled apps, though, and Uninstall is grayed out, replaced by a listing under "System Components" instead. Learning how to remove system apps in Windows 11 starts with understanding that label, because it usually means removal isn't offered through the normal path for that particular app.

Google Maps can now take a specific craving, match it to a restaurant, and help you start an order through a partner service, all inside the same conversation. That capability runs through Ask Maps, which uses Gemini to analyze photos, reviews, and menus to work out what you want to eat.

Pixel Watch 4 owners who feel left out of the Pixel Watch 5 launch have a workaround. According to Android Authority, Reddit user m0rr0ng0 found that sideloading a newer build of the Pixel Watch Faces app unlocks five Pixel Watch 5 faces: Weave, Chronograph, a Steph Curry edition, Multicolor Reveal, and Multicolor Modular.

This guide covers how to disable AI Mode in Chrome on desktop: the shortcuts that show up in the address bar, the New Tab Page search box, and the right-click context menu on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It doesn't touch Google Search's own AI Mode tab, which lives outside the browser entirely and gets a short, separate note near the end.
